Outback Travel
Outback roads can lead to some great adventures but make sure you are prepared and safe when travelling on these roads. A few things to keep in mind if you are heading out on an outback road:
- Wildlife! There are often cattle and other wildlife on the roads, they have a habit of dashing in front of you at the last minute. Also, be aware of large birds feeding on carcasses. It takes time for them to become airborne and high enough to clear your vehicle. If you see birds ahead, sound the horn and slow down to allow them time to get out of your way.
- Ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound.
- Consult the RACQ about road conditions, spare parts and mechanical attention in the outback before you plan your trip.
- Plan an itinerary for your trip and check out available fuel stops.
- Carry supplies of water, petrol, food, spare parts and a first aid kit.
- Inform a trusted person of your intended destination and routes
- Take a 4WD vehicle when travelling off-road.
- There are a number of road trains that travel on dirt roads. Drive with your headlights on to help them see you in the dust.
- Remember that crocodiles inhabit rivers and estuaries in the Northern Gulf Region.
The best time to travel in outback Queensland is between May and October.
Transport Services
QANTAS Link is the main air service provider in Cloncurry. There are regular flights to Townsville and Brisbane. Check their website for more details.
Both Bus Queensland and Greyhound Australia offer twice-weekly services to Townsville. Bus Queensland coaches provide a daily service to Brisbane.
Queensland Rail offers a return passenger service to Townsville twice per week. The railway station is located on Hutchinson Parade. Phone 1300 131 722.
